Making Your Bollywood Dance

Student Learning Materials and Activities

Warm Up

Move around the room in a large circle while listening to music. Can you:

Walk on your tip toes to the music?

Skip in time to the music?

Side step to the music?

Let's Create

Working in a group of three you will each create a dance element that your group can perform in unison.

What does unison mean? Unison means that you will perform the action at the same time as the other dancers in your group.

Use the dance element planner to describe and plan your dance element with your group.

Practice your groups dance elements together.

Practice and Review
  • Practice your group's dance elements together.

  • Do each of your elements link and flow to communicate your story or mood?

  • Ask your teacher for feedback.

  • Perform your dance for another group.

  • As an audience member, observe and look for good actions. Think about you think they are good actions.

  • What did you do well today?

  • What could you improve?

  • Concentrate as I perform.

  • Use control in my movements.

  • Think about the space and where myself and others are.

  • Use timing and movement qualities to express my ideas to the audience.

  • Use clear start and finish positions.

Your performance skill checklist
Perform and discuss

Perform your group's dance for another group.

Interview the other group and record the interview.

As a group think of questions you could ask.

Include:

  • Can you describe the similarities between your group's dance and our group's dance?

  • Can you describe the differences between your group's dance and our group's dance.

Finally, let the other group interview your group.

Performing and responding

In your group perform your dance for the whole class.

As an audience member, you will observe and look for good actions, thinking about why you think they are good actions.

Select two other groups and describe why you liked their dance.

Use the Responding worksheet to write your descriptions.

  • As a class brainstorm which dance elements could link together to create a class dance.

  • Select only the best as actions, you do not need a lot.

  • Actions and movement sequences can be repeated to support your choreography.

  • Sequences can contrast and be different or sequences can be repeated over and over.

  • How will you use the dance space for your performance?

  • Plan a dance map.

  • Practice your dance.

  • Who in your class would make a good leader. They can be positioned at the front of the group formation to support other the dancers.

  • Think about your costumes. Research and plan how you can add this element to your dance.
