Tips

Think about the  instruments and type of sound they had in the cultural music we explored.

Make the rhythm interesting by including more than one note type or a rest.

How did you use these elements?

What was your intention when you chose these elements?

Describe how the element conveyed a mood or a picture you had in mind while composing?

Remember that some instruments overpower others so you may need to change your ostinato so that it fits and sounds great when its layered with other instruments.

Congratulations!

You now have your very own ostinato rhythm composition and two performances to add to your music portfolio!!

Well Done!!

(O'Brien & Miles, 1998)

You will:

Choose a cultural style of music.

Select an appropriate percussion instrument that fits that style of music.

Create an Ostinato

  • One bar rhythm in four-four time.

  • Write the rhythm pattern using music notation

Record performance (film)

  • Play the ostinato ten times and use dynamics (variances in volume)

After your performance (film)

  • provide a reflective commentary that advises

              - the cultural style of the music

              - why you chose your instrument

              - music elements (timbre, rhythm, tempo, dynamics)

Form small groups (two to four) to layer the percussion of the combined ostinatos.

  • Agree on one cultural style and choose appropriate instruments

  • Revise individual ostinatos to layer the percussion to best effect

Record performance (film)

  • Play the ostinato ten times

Now its your turn to put everything together that you have learnt !
